TA3D Font visual improvment

Can I create more detailed font for TA? Using original TA font sheet, rescale it something like x4 times and clean the mess, so the letters become more detailed and easilly read?

go ahead :wink: , and you can also include some unicode symbols as well :D . We'll see later how to put that in one font file. I don't know if a gaf can do the job ...

part of the fonts are there. But TA3D reads fonts from a GAF:
anims/hattfont11.gaf and anims/hattfont12.gaf both contain the font

the 12 version is a bit bigger, so you might consider using it instead of 11.

Those files contains an ASCII-8 font (whereas I think the PCX files don't ...)

How should I resize anims/hattfont12.gaf?

If I scale it 2x will it be ok? Then the letters will become with doubled height and double width. New font will be usefull with the high resolutions, but with the low resolutions do we are still have to use anims/hattfont11.gaf?

We can use one HD font and resize it at rendering time. Let OpenGL do the work for us :wink:

I`m scaling current hattfont12.gaf font x3 times. Different symbols have different height and width values, and after rescaling same proportions stays. Am I doing it right? Or there are will be some restrictions on width/height proportions?

I`ll rescale all and edit several letters, after this I`ll assemble new gaf and send it to you for tests. If all will be right - I`ll edit all the others letters the same way.

when you disassemble a GAF, it creates a txt file which describes the GAF and tell how to rebuild it. In this GAF there are offsets associated with images, you must scale those offsets too otherwise font symbols will be misplaced.

Don`t have any txt file. What soft are you using for GAF managment?

P.S. I`ve experinced a few difficulties with assembling GAF, maybe your soft more documented?

I`ll send you a mail with font bmps, try to create GAF from them and test.

All font resized x3 and letters H I J K L M is redone.

P.S. I`ll find another soft and assemble GAF with next versiob of font

ta3d includes the only tool which can manipulate 24/32bits GAFs ... since it's an extension of the GAF format created for TA3D.

Is the current TA3D version supports different font size/resolution, so I could test it during edit? What max height of the font do you think is best suited currently for TA3D?

the only limit is your video card texture size limit which should be more than enough for this. The problem is scaling ... currently it's done in GUI files, but it's the size of widgets not font directly. The scale factor is set in the code, we'll have to find a better way of doing this.

And what should i do in this case ? I need to know how it wil be scaled to fit with the most common resolutions, so I could chose the texture, base font size and detail level.

you only have to create symbols texture with a same scale, then we can put font configuration in ta3d.mod file ...

Can I test new font (3x times scaled) with current test 7 release, configuring ta3d.mod file? It would be usefull, so I could test it on my side to fix all the bugs, before sending it to you?

TEST 7 doesn't support font config, sorry. I didn't have time to do it properly, actually I am still wondering about font size design : currently you can change scale font in the font object itself, when displaying it, and the GUI skin should be able to do it too (broken for now) ...

So using a font size may not be the way to go, may be just set some conditions that font must satisfy and calculate the scale factor from there ... maybe something like : "we want it to fit in that space(need to define how) and we just give you the font as is", what do you think ?

I don`t sure that I understand you properly.
My suggestions are:
- we should have only 1 font (HD)
- it should be rescaled for different resolutions
- i suggest 3x or 4x times scaled from current one

I was just thinking about the way we should control the scale factor.

Of course we need a HD font, but it may not look good when downscaling it for low resolutions with some hardware ... or maybe using GL_LINEAR for texture filtering (it won't flicker since font scale doesn't change dynamically) ... needs testing :wink:

using a SVG loader, it should be possible, but before we start thinking to implement that ... remember we'll go SDL for 0.5.1, so there is no need to implement something we'll have to change completely for next release :( .

Hopefully, with SDL we'll be able to load more image formats and play with TTF fonts with only a few SDL extensions :)

well that's a good question ... if we can use a HD TTF font, then it would be great, because it'll be easier to integrate Unicode symbols (just add them in the font) and we'll only need SDL_ttf to manage fonts.

See if you can create a TTF font - I've never done that, if someone knows how to do that ... - and continue creating glyphs (beware that TTF is vectorized ... I think). I hope we'll have released 0.5.0 when you'll need to test a TTF font :)

thanks, I've added all what I could to our translation file.

This showed me something:
your translations are highly dependent of the context, more than other translations, so several times I had to chose between several translations for one string. This will probably require that we change a few strings. For now I am working on translation code. I am cleaning things a bit, so you'll end up with one translation file per language, that way you'll just have to write a Chinese file to get your translations without having other languages in the middle.

I have separated translation files per language in current SVN, there is a chinese.po file you can play with :). Beware that the fonts don't seem to contain glyphs for the corresponding part of unicode :(. I hope we won't have to use multiple fonts, it would be odd on screen.

Beware that we are currently modifying lots of things, and that SVN may not build or run when you get it.

Yeah, I've seen that, the fonts shipped with TA3D do not contain enough glyphs to display the translations :cry:
I'll test other fonts, and if I can I'll make a font that can display all the translations we have merging existing fonts.

ok, I merged our fonts with a more complete one. So now we have 3 big fonts and both japanese and chinese are rendered correctly. Also the fonts contain so many glyphs that it should be able to support much more languages now :D

This is crazy,i will play multi in TA3d-ta33a mod when i back home.

A texture wrong,the lava should intead with cloud.
The hign water couldn't show in ATI redarn 2300,but extreme is ok in 2300 and FX5200, :x

I also added you're nick to the AUTHORS file (in the translations section), if you want to change your information in that file, let me know.
I noticed a small thing that was missing in the translations: in Internet screen, the "Log out" button is not translated, and in the units screen, "enabled" isn't translated either.

I also fixed a bug that prevented I18N module from translating strings with a trailing space.

no fsaa couldn't translate by resource.But it work when you press fsaa box

Newest chinese translate,do some change to make them more readable and fluent,and some new finded word, :)
