Test on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) / Gnome

Post by HolySmoke » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:52 pm

this gives some weird results:

TA3D 0.4.2 (from http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/releases/ta ... 32.tar.bz2 )
Allegro 2:4.2.2-2
AllegroGL 0.4.3
FMOD 4.16.10
Ubuntu 8.10
Gnome 2.24.1
Kernel 2.6.27-8-generic

* huge visual bugs, especially when having some gnome apps open in the background
* unable to run as non-root user (or may that be somewhat my fault?)
* game crashes rarely

run as normal user (owning every single file)

Code: Select all

version: 1.4 Mesa 7.2
-> seems to work, but the screen is black with horizontal coloured lines, where the buttons should be on the first menu screen, the welcome screen just appears to be slightly darker as intendet
-> when run with gnome apps like rhythmbox or nautilus in background, active content in the background apps causes black flicker in both the game menus and ingame
-> looks like the problem's got something to do with gnome/gtk apps refreshing their display and screwing up the rendering engine of ta3d, so maybe this is a gdm problem

ingame output (if that helps)

Hi,

it's interesting to see the problems of 0.4.2 running on Intrepid :). I've never tested those binaries on it, I built them with hardy (I doubt it was gutsy ...) so they may not work so well with Intrepid. Also you have an Intel video chip which is known not to run TA3D 0.4.2 very well. I suggest you test the last 0.5.0 TEST packages (the last one available in our apt repository has been built for Intrepid), they come with some fixes for Intel chips (it runs on an Asus EEE PC).

Normally you shouldn't run TA3D as root, this is a bad idea and may prevent it from running as normal user (if it changes some file access rights).

Here is how to install 0.5.0 development packages:
use our apt repository:
deb http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/apt/ stable main
deb http://ta3d.darkstars.co.uk/apt/ testing main

you'll need both 'stable' and 'testing' since dependencies are in 'stable' while TA3D 0.5.0 development packages are in 'testing'.

then install ta3d the way you usually install packages. Once the package is installed you'll need some resource files to play with, you can easily install the demo files from our apt repository, just look for the tademo package. If you want to use TA archives, just put them in ~/.ta3d/resources/ (NB: this is something new compared to 0.4.2).

I recommend you first test with only a minimal set of resource files.

Regarding the graphical interferences with other apps, I doubt we can do something, this is at driver/chip level, maybe some tweaks in driver options can fix it, or try to run it fullscreen.

I use Intrepid too but I use KDE instead of Gnome, I'll test in Gnome when I have time.

PS: can you send me your ta3d.log file ? (in 0.5.0 it's located in ~/.ta3d/log/, in 0.4.2 it's in install folder)

aah yes, didn't know there was a ~/ta3d folder, but totally makes sense. of course is was root:root :? the game launched after i owned that dir (recursively), but had the following error:

Code: Select all

Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:
#0 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0 [0xb77e17c7]
#1 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0(xcb_xlib_unlock+0x31) [0xb77e1891]
#2 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 [0xb7865521]
#3 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 [0xb7d342e2]
#4 ./libagl.so.0.4.3(allegro_gl_printf_ex+0x121) [0xb7cd5171]
the flickering (in fullscreen mode too) seems to be a common gnome/intel bug as i as well as a friend of mine have the same problem with ut and totem, q3a however not.

sorry i had to sent you the log per email, but we got a very annoying proxy here at school which prevents ftp connections (lame, even ssh)

will try v0.5 soon

sounds like you don't have required rights to access OpenGL hardware or libraries (or some of them)...

apparently the flickering is caused by compiz, i surely got rid of that.

after that, there were no more problems with color changes in sprites, though the tooltips displaying still massively slowed down the game menu.

there were a bunch of X updates for intel cards in the past few days, but still the ingame speed is quite slow using the "intel" driver on a Pentium dual-core T2080, 1.73 GHz and an intel graphics media accelerator 950, also known as 945GM (i know it sucks ;-)) and 2GB DDR2 on 1280x800

haven't tried the "vesa" driver yet, but what would i expect

i don't know if there is a possibility to run fast and beautiful 3d graphics with that 945 thing. is there a config-tool or some parameter to set the screen resolution for the game to 800x600 maybe?

thx
best regards Holy

Intel chips don't support T&L, those calculations are done by the CPU which slows down rendering. You can cut the geometry size by using several options in the config menu:
_enable low definition map
_disable sky rendering
_set water quality to 0
_disabled explosion particles
_disable particles (if it's still too slow)

those options are the more geometry demanding ones, you can also reduce screen resolution (800x600 is TA3D default resolution). You can also chose a 16 bits mode instead of 32 bits one, it may speed things up a bit. If it's still too slow, try to load only the minimum set of models and units, it may be a memory flood problem ... hopefully this should work better since last few revisions.
