I've just tried it, it works well enough to play a game : 25 fps in 640x480 using the orthographic camera (of course, all settings set to low/none/disabled except low definition map ).
Loading takes time when it builds the cache (the EEE's SSD isn't very fast). It doesn't like when there are too many units on screen (because there is no T&L acceleration, so it doesn't like processing geometry ).
And note model renderers currently don't use display lists (except for features, but this is a special case) so rendering models could be a bit faster.
Anyway it runs fine at 3x (I didn't test above because AI would have kicked my ass). I also ran it in 800x480, it's also playable but a bit slower of course. If you really want to play TA3D without T&L acceleration (most Intel chips don't support that) you'd better run it on a powerful CPU since he's going to do all the T&L work.
I remember that TA3D 0.5 betas could run at approx 15fps on a Pentium 3 800MHz with an old ATI Rage Pro 128 and at more than 60fps on the same machine with a GeForce 2 MX !!

EEEPC, haha. It wasn't for play, but if TA3D could play in telephone..... (just a accidental talk)
In this case, mouse and keyboard should always be normal with any Fps, it will helpful in players feel.
And that Nvida and Ati, hehe. No idea in their drivers. Ati keet stop update in long years. Install some new drivers (3rd also ok) helpful in this
