New version

Post by xpoy » Sat Jun 27, 2009 8:05 pm

Well, I know it was a main mothed to keep TA3D work in best. But just too fast, as we see, the new alpha be need in little time after peceed.
In this time, there are always importand update most be test.
But I seggstion let the alpha version release be cyclical, for example a pack per week. :)

I`m against it. New test builds should be when the really important things was changed, that are in need for testing. There is no need to re-build stuff for each minor improvment, especially every week.

Balthazar is right, alpha versions are not stable enough to be released on a per new feature or per week basis. I build a new alpha when I need to get some feed back (like for audio cd support which seems not to work on my system :( )

I mean, that some times this day releaze a new version, but next day, just next day there are another importand releaze, these 2 could be together. But we can't guess what's next, thus a cyclical releaze will help in this.
And I agree This is main thing for test...

if I release 2 packages in 2 days it's because I need feed back on new things, if bugs appear after I implement 2 critical modules, it may be difficult to know which one is responsible for which bug.

Currently 0.6 is in alpha stage which means several features and important things are still missing from it so cyclical release is not to be expected until it reaches beta stage.

the first beta version will at least have a finished NetServer client with player stats and the possibility to start games and properly manage mods (currently you can only manage mods, there is no stats and you can't setup and run a game from there).
Also it should be able to save and restore a Lua VM, this is required to save and load games since now we need to restore Lua VMs as well (for unit scripts this is required, otherwise the game won't be restored properly, ie units will be buggy when loaded).

We're not too far from it actually, just a few things left, mainly:
_save/restore Lua VMs
_finish the NetServer stuffs

Once TA3D reaches version 0.6, the only thing that'll prevent it from being called 1.0 is the lack of free resource packs :( and probably a few mod compatibility issues.
