in <= 0.5.2, those files can store data in JPG, but since we're moving to SDL and we don't have JPGAllegro any more, it's much easier (and cleaner) to use zlib to store these data. So 24/32bits GAFs from <= 0.5.2 won't be compatible with new releases (including 0.5.3).
3DM textures can be stored uncompressed (compatible with all versions, including new ones), but JPG mode will be broken too (replaced with RAW data compressed with zlib).
